Governor Targets Tunnel Hill/Trail of Tears for Cuts
The second round of layoffs at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will result in the layoffs of the site superintendents at the Tunnel Hill State Trail, headquartered in Vienna, and the Trail of Tears State Forest, outside of Jonesboro.
The Southern Illinoisan has the details in a Les Winkeler story entitled, "Two Local IDNR Superintendents to Lose Positions".
According to the story the agency is not going to close the sites, but it's awful hard to operate a site without supervision. Likewise, I don't see where there will be any budgetary savings if all they do is appoint someone else to the positions.
It's just the latest example of why Illinois needs to change the way we fund and manage state parks and historic sites.
The Southern's second story on the layoffs identifies about a dozen positions overall set for slashing in Southern Illinois' state sites.
